"Yksinkertainen kaunis" (001.)
1976-77 ajatuksemme pyörivät hurjan paljon bändiasioissa, haaveilimme olevamme lavalla rockbändin kera ja piirsimme kilpaa muistaakseni siihen liittyviä kuvia. Ainakin itse tein sellaisia useita
["Simple Beautiful": In 1976–77, our thoughts revolved heavily around band-related matters; we dreamed of being on stage with a rock band and, if I recall correctly, competed to see who could draw the most pictures
on that theme. I, for one, created several such drawings, and they can all be viewed here now. In this particular image, I’ve depicted three of my friends—as for me, it seems I’ve received an
electric shock from the microphone, which apparently has me retching! This is the first piece I ever officially completed, though I only brought two earlier drafts to a playable state in 2025. The
papers for those can be seen under entries 439. and 440. You can tell from the documents that I intuitively attempted to represent guitar strings and frets in much the same way as is done in actual
tablature notation. I knew absolutely nothing about music, chords, composition, or musical notation, and I clearly remember feeling completely helpless as I tried to figure out how music is
composed - and how one might go about writing down one’s own songs.]
| "Hippla GT 850cc WC" (002.)
70-luvulla minulla oli eräs luokkatoveri, joka muistini mukaan hoki usein tuollaista fraasia (Hippla GT 850 kuutioinen WC), josta olen kappaleen nimen ottanut talteen.
[Back in the 70s, I had a classmate who, if I recall correctly, often repeated a phrase like that ("Hippla GT 850 cc, WC" [WC = water-closet, or toilet]), from which I’ve taken the title for
this track.]
| "Enkeli-Farssi" (003.)
Kaverit
soittivat, minä lauloin.
["An Angel Farce": This picture is, in fact, a direct view into my room in the 'White House' in Punkaharju (which I believe is yellow now) (1976?), located next to the station. Even the Styrofoam boards
on the wall - complete with maps and telescopes - are the real deal. The track itself is a bit of an embarrassment in my body of work, as the vocal part was recorded entirely improvised, and the lyrics
reflect that. My friends played, and I sang.]
| "E-duuri Boogie" (004.)
Unohdin, että ennen Singular Bandiä, mietimme kovasti porukalla, mikä bändimme nimeksi voisi tulla; pidimme jopa äänestyksen asiasta ja voittajaksi selvisi "The Rate of the Light".
vuosien varrella saada järkevään asuun useitakin kertoja. Tämä versioni jäi henkiin. Onhan minulla tuolla akustisella kitaralla kasetille nauhoitettuja versioita hyvinkin runsaasti tallella, tietenkin.
1983 sain aika kehnon 4-raitakelanauhurin hankittua ja tein sillä ekoja moniäänisiä nauhoituksiani ja kokeilujani.
["E Major Boogie": I forgot that before Singular Band, we spent a lot of time as a group brainstorming a name for our band; we even held a vote, and "The Rate of the Light" emerged as the winner. The
image accompanying this song likely depicts that lineup, drawn by me: from left to right, Kimmo Mäkelä, myself, and Seppo Räsänen on drums. The instruments are the ones I owned at the time: Kimmo is
playing a piece of junk, a homemade "plank" guitar, which was missing its high E-string (it probably wasn't my Framus guitar yet, though that one was also red). I have a poor-quality Landola guitar
slung over my back, and the drummer is sitting behind a broken Szpaderski drum kit; the tom-tom mount was busted, the cymbal was something he’d hammered out of a copper sheet at school, and so on. In
short, a completely authentic picture! The song itself might actually date back to that era, it’s basic rock music that I recorded and tried to refine into a proper form several times over the years.
This particular version is the one that survived. Naturally, I still have plenty of versions recorded on cassette tape using that acoustic guitar. In 1983, I managed to acquire a rather mediocre
4-track reel-to-reel tape recorder, which I used to create my first multi-track recordings and experiments.]
jatkua jonkin aikaa. Minulla taisi siihen aikaan olla tapana alkaa piirtämään ('Sattuma-piiroksia'), edes jotakin, ja noista kuvista voi huomata, kuinka niiden luonne vähän kerrassaan muuttui
realistisemmaksi, kun riita alkoi laantua... Minusta aika mielenkiintoinen huomio.
["Nameless / Best Friend": The title of this piece (the theme of which I only realized a few years ago resembles the music from "Pippi Longstocking"), stems from a falling-out I had with my best friend,
which led to a period of the "silent treatment." Back then, I had a habit of starting to draw (what I called "chance drawings") just to put something down on paper. Looking at those images, you can
see how their character gradually shifted toward something more realistic as the conflict began to subside... I find that a rather interesting observation.]
| "Musiikin alkeet" (009.)
Teksti kertoo
rehellisesti, millaista oli soittamisen alkutaipaleeni, paskoja laitteita, jne.
["Fundamentals of Music": I drew this picture in the hospital, after a tonsillectomy, in 1979. I was bored and missed my own music room in the 'White House' in Punkaharju. (Another picture already
appeared earlier!) The text describes,
honestly, what my early days of playing music were like — shitty gear, and so on.]
| "Fobia" (010.)
Kappaleen nimenä oli alkujaan "Roomalaisten kauhu", eli Jeesus-juttu. Myöhemmin muutin tekstin kertomaan kuvitteellisesta ekasta keikastamme, ja teksti on omalta kantiltani ihan paikkansa pitävä.
["Phobia": The song was originally titled "The Terror of the Romans", a Jesus-themed piece. Later, I changed the lyrics to be about our first-ever (fictional) gig, and from my perspective, the text is
actually quite accurate.]
| "Lady & Miss" (014.)
["Lady & Miss": The song depicts the Tynkkynen house in Punkaharju - or at least it was there back then (1976–77). The piece itself came into being while I was walking home from a friend’s place in the winter
darkness. I’ve always been on my guard because of bears,
so I often carried a German bayonet with me; but as I gazed up at the stars in the sky, I no longer feared a thing. The song took shape right then on
the walk home; I was thinking of the lyrics, and perhaps the music too, in some way,
and as I recall, it came together quite easily. It was originally in English, which is how it got its name.]
| "Komeesti Boogieta" (015.)
Jälleen teksti kertoo bändihaaveistani, kuinka saisin musiikkilleni ihmisten hyväksynnän ja ymmärryksen. Teksti toimii suomeksi vähän tökerösti ja olen yrittänyt saada siitä edes siedettävän version talteen.
Usein piirsin samat (varhaiset) musiikki-ystäväni noihin kuviini (Raimo Sairanen, Kimmo Mäkelä, Seppo Räsänen, Juha ja Sami van Ingen, Urpo Turtiainen, Timo Lähteenmäki, jopa Pekka Nikulainen, Harri Kettunen
["Style-in of Boogie": Once again, the text touches upon my dreams of being in a band, of how I might gain acceptance and understanding for my music from others. The text feels a bit clumsy in Finnish, and I
have tried to salvage at least a tolerable version of it.
I often included those same (early) musical friends of mine in these drawings: Raimo Sairanen, Kimmo Mäkelä, Seppo Räsänen, Juha and Sami van Ingen,
Urpo Turtiainen, Timo Lähteenmäki, even Pekka Nikulainen and Harri Kettunen; and in one picture, even Utto Kokko appears, wearing a top hat, and so on. Mind you, I suspect that not all of them actually ended
up becoming musicians, but - of course - we couldn't have known that back then.]
| "Tehtiin biisi" (016.)
["We made a Song!": We created this track while jamming together with Juha van Ingen. I suppose I composed it into its current form on my own, but I associate him with it. We both just played guitars on it.]
| "Älä mua jätä!" (017.)
Tiedän piirroksen idean olevan rajun liikkeen (kolarin) tallentaminen paperille piirrokseni avulla.
["Don't Leave me!":
I have always wanted to express my music as an interpretation of powerful emotions, and this is likely one of my first such creations. The structure was somewhat unusual even back then,
but I often let my spontaneous ideas remain as they are, in their original form. I have included a drawing of mine that is loosely related to this theme, dating perhaps from the 1980s. The concept behind
the drawing is to capture a moment of intense motion - a collision - on paper.]
| "Eloisa?" (021.)
Siksi avaruusaiheinen piirrokseni.
["Lively?": This song came into being - perhaps even in a dream—upon waking, and if I recall correctly, it was finished right away...? That’s how I remember it. Renovations were underway at the
Punkaharju station in 1978; one of the painters was the drummer for a certain band, a guy named 'Jälä', who would later become a classmate of mine at vocational school. Well, the song is about how
humans ruin everything on Earth, though, in truth, I’ve never actually had anything against space flights; it’s just that my original lyrics leaned a bit in that direction. I’ve tweaked the text
slightly, as it was even worse back when it was first written. That’s the reason for my space-themed drawing.]
| "Huviniemi" (022.)
Jälleen bändiaiheisia piirroksiani. Teksti muuten on täysin totuudenmukainen, ihan 100%. Bändi toisessa kuvassa on olevinaan Status Quo, joka on aina ollut oma suuri suosikkini. Elämäni toinen itse
ostamani levykin (1974) oli Status Quon "Quo". Ja siltäkin levyltä bändimme Singular Band soitti 3 kappaletta covereina. Kaikkiaan soitimme 9 Status Quo -coveria.
["Huviniemi": More of my band-themed drawings. By the way, the text is completely truthful, 100% accurate. The band in the second picture is meant to be Status Quo, who have always been a huge
favorite of mine. In fact, the second record I ever bought for myself (back in 1974) was Status Quo’s "Quo". My band, Singular Band, even played three tracks from that very album as covers. In total,
we performed nine Status Quo covers.]
| "Ikuinen unelma" (035.)
Muitakin piirroksia on olemassa tuosta häkkyrästä. Osan sanoista improvisoi Petri Manninen, n. 1980.
Hieno tarina!
["Eternal Dream": I built an 'Observatorio' in our yard out of scrap wood and plastic sheeting; the idea was to observe the stars with my telescope. It didn't really amount to much - I think the only
thing I ever did there was boil some tea in a samovar.
Still, it was a significant structure, and there’s even a song about those days. There are other drawings of that contraption, too. Petri Manninen
improvised some of the lyrics around 1980. He had no-
objection to me singing his text. The first drawing is an actual oil painting of mine, done on paper, though. I drew the second one while I had a
recorder running in Punkaharju, letting some children
freely improvise and create their own space-themed audio drama (set on the planet Mars). I was in another room, sketching a few pictures as their
fascinating story unfolded.
The audio drama featured a diamond mountain, a rope, a gun to go with it, and so on. A wonderful story!]
| "Rauhan Laulu" (041.)
Tulin kai viimeiselle lomalleni Intistä ja tein kappaleen niitä aikoja. Version huuliharppu on hieman alavireinen minun korvaani. Piirros 1 on peräisin ystäväni Jukka-Pekka Piepposen ohjelmoimasta Atarille
tarkoitetun pelin aihiosta. Hän ohjelmoi ja minä piirsin kuvia. Kuvassa suomalaisia sotilaita korsussa. Kuvan 2 olen ehkä piirtänyt n. 1972, 12-vuotiaana. Siinä on Hitlerin lapsiarmeijan sotilaita.
Kuva 3 on Atarilla piirretty joulukortti, tein niitä muutamia ja lähetinkin niitä eteenpäin. Piirros 4 on kai edelleen vuoden 1972 satoa, luulisin. Se on eräänlaisen 'piirrostaistelun' lopputulos.
["Song of Peace": I believe I wrote this song around the time I was returning from my final leave during military service. To my ears, the harmonica in this version sounds a bit flat. Drawing 1 comes
from a prototype for an Atari game programmed by my friend Jukka-Pekka Piepponen; he handled the programming, and I created the visuals. It depicts Finnish soldiers in a dugout. I likely drew Image 2
around 1972, when I was 12 years old; it shows soldiers from Hitler’s 'child army'. Image 3 is a Christmas card created on an Atari - I made a few of these and sent them out. Drawing 4 also dates from
around 1972, I suspect. It is the result of a sort of 'drawing battle'.]
| "Humanoidi" (087.)
Kappale on alkujaan sävelletty 1984, mutta tein siihen paljon muutoksia 2014. Varsinkin tekstiä muokkasin paljon. Piirroksissa näkyy taas rakkauteni avaruusasioihin. 2 viimeistä ovat huumoriani.
Piirros 3 näyttää, kuinka tarkkailemme yötaivasta 'Observaroviosta' ystäväni kotipihalla. Sillä välin humanoidi on käynyt katsomassa, mitä touhuamme, emmekä itse tiedä mitään siitä.
Piirros 4:ssä metsuri taisi törmätä UFO:n.
["Humanoid": The piece was originally composed in 1984, but I made many changes to it in 2014, the lyrics, in particular, were heavily revised. The drawings once again reflect my love for all things
space-related; the last two showcase my sense of humor.
Drawing 3 shows us observing the night sky from the "Observatorio" in my friend’s backyard. Meanwhile, a humanoid has dropped by to see what
we’re up to, completely unbeknownst to us.
In drawing 4, it looks like a lumberjack has run into a UFO.]
| Air no. 2, e (098.)
Siinä on pari
luostarin munkkia.
[This piece has always been a work very dear to me. 'Drawing 2' represents the first time I translated a feeling-born from music into a drawing; could this perhaps be an example of the 'doctrine of the
affections' ("Affektenlehre") mentioned by Bach? It features a couple of monks from a monastery. The other two drawings are 'monks' that I created on an Atari STe, that is how I have named them.]
| "Shotdown" (173.)
"Shotdown" -nimi biisilleni tulee Hawkwind -yhtyeen kappaleesta "Shotdown in Flames". Piirros taas liittyy siihen, että muistaakseni tulin kai koulusta kotiin (1976?), ja olin ostanut uuden
tushipakkauksen. Piirsin saman tien ison määrän piirroksia niillä sellaisenaan, ja tämä on yksi niistä nopeista töistäni. Kone lienee Halifax (en koskaan piirtänyt mallista, vaan aina päästä).
Olen aina tykännyt piirtää nopeasti ja saada liikkeen tallennettua paperille mahdollisimman elävänä.
[The name "Shotdown" for my song comes from the Hawkwind track "Shotdown in Flames." As for the drawing, if I recall correctly, I had just come home from school (back in 1976, perhaps?) and had bought
a new set of felt-tip pens. I immediately set to work, producing a large number of drawings with them, and this is one of those quick pieces. The aircraft is likely a Halifax (I never drew from a model;
I always drew from my imagination). I have always enjoyed drawing quickly, aiming to capture movement on paper as vividly as possible.]
| "Kylmä kivi" (178.)
Minulla on jotenkin sellainen käsitys, että olen ajatellut äitiäni aika paljon tehdessäni tähän sanoja 2003. Musiikin aihio on syntsaimprovisaationa syntynyt jo 1998. Äitini kuoli 2004, eli
yhteys sanojen ja hänen välillään on aika looginen. Kuva taas liittyy piirtämiini huumorijuttuihin, aikoinaan Hymy-lehdessä oli Puutaheinää -osuus - nämä edustavat samaa linjaa.
Vitsipiiroksiani on olemassa 47 kpl.
["Cold Stone": I have a feeling that I was thinking about my mother quite a bit when I wrote the lyrics for this in 2003. The musical seed for the piece originated as a synthesizer improvisation back
in 1998. My mother passed away in 2004, so the connection between the lyrics and her is quite logical. As for the image, it relates to the humorous drawings I used to create, back in the day, the
magazine "Hymy" featured a section called "Puuta-heinää" ("Nonsense/Tall Tales"), and these drawings follow that same style. There are 47 of these humorous cartoons in total.]
| "Kysyit Jeesuksesta..." (200.)
Tyttäreni kysyi joskus, ehkä kouluasioihin liittyen, Jessuksesta... No, minä olen ateisti, joten en pysty vääntäytymään mihinkään sovinnaiseen rooliin, varsinkaan tässä asiassa. Biisi kertoo
niistä ajatuksista, joita itse pyörittelen päässäni, uskontoon liittyen. Piirros taas on vitsi, muistaakseni ammattikouluajoiltani sähkölinjalta, "Ensimmäinen ristikytkentä".
["You asked about Jesus...": My daughter once asked about Jesus, perhaps in connection with something at school... Well, I’m an atheist, so I can’t really force myself into any conventional role,
especially not when it comes to this. The song explores the thoughts I personally grapple with regarding religion. The drawing, on the other hand, is a joke, dating back, if I recall correctly, to
my time in the electrical line at vocational school, titled "The First Cross-Connection."]
Koin voimakkaana tekstin ilmapiirin.
Näitä 'tölli' -piirroksia minulla on useampia ja pidän niiden piirtämisestä - nopeasti ja kokonaisuus hahmottaen.
["The Cottage": The title of my piece is "Tölli" [The Shack/Cottage], and I composed the music myself after reading a book by Maikki Järnefelt (or one that recounts her travels, including to this
region). The atmosphere of the text made a strong impression on me.
I have several of these "shack" drawings; I enjoy creating them—working quickly and capturing the scene as a whole.]
| "Innovaatio" (213.)
["Innovation": Initially, only the first part of the song existed, but at some point, I composed the rest of it. I personally like the track a lot. Oh, and by the way: it’s about some instruments
that my friend Urpo Turtiainen lent me back in 2003 (when I was getting back into this band stuff). One was a guitar that had been left forgotten in a shed, or some other unfortunate spot—for
years (the low E string wasn't quite right, and the neck might have been slightly warped). And the drums - thanks for those, Urpo, wherever you are... He gave me the chance to get involved in
the band scene once again. I am very grateful for that, and I find myself thinking of him quite often; we’re the same age and were schoolmates. For a while, he used to travel regularly by bus,
from quite a distance, to our place at the Pinkaharju station so we could play together. The guitar was his instrument. Urpo had even learned to read sheet music to some extent, back when I didn't
have a clue about it. The drawing is just one of many; it looks like the band has a female bassist.]
| "Omituista" (219.)
Kappele on aina ollut omakuva minusta itsestäni. Kuvat liittyvät siis vain 'erikoisuuden', 'omituisuuden', käsitteeseen. Ekan piiroksen nimi on "Korvat koon mukaan". Toinen piirros on
omakuvani peilin kautta. The New Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians". Muuten... biisissä
kuuluu ainoa isäni vanhalla harmonikalla soittamani pikku-melodiasoolo. Enhän osaa harmonikkaa soittaa - se saa kitaristi/pianistin aivot sekaisin.
["Peculiar": The piece has always been a self-portrait. The images, therefore, relate solely to the concept of 'peculiarity' or 'strangeness'. The title of the first drawing is "Ears According
to Size." The second drawing is a self-portrait seen through a mirror. In it, I have either just received - or am eagerly awaiting the arrival of - a 20-volume music encyclopedia set, "The New
Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians". By the way... the song features a short melodic solo played by me with my father's an old accordion. I don't actually know how to play the accordion
- it completely confuses a guitarist/pianist's brain!]
PC-piirroksia.
["Our Gear": In 2003, I started playing band music with my nephew and his friends. I was worried that our neighbors would get annoyed by the noise, so I composed this song. But
the neighbor,
a 'gentleman' living next door, just said to go right ahead, or something to that effect. So, we had good neighbors, at least where we lived. Back then, I even applied for a grant for our
musical endeavors, but
it was a vain hope... The images include a drawing of the band, a bassist (who also appears in another song), and a drummer. Essentially an illustration representing
each member of our band. The last two
are digital drawings (created on a PC).]
| "Bass Jam no. 1" (243.)
Kuva esiintyy toisenkin kappaleen liitteenä ja on PC-piirrokseni. Tämä nauhoitus on muuten tehty Fostexin 4-raitakasettinauhurilla. Katsoin juuri: sivustollani lienee yhä noin 30 kpl
4-raitakasettidekillä nauhoitettuja sävellyksiäni, tai ainakin jokin versio sävellyksestä.
[The image also appears as an attachment to another track and is a drawing I made on a PC. Incidentally, this recording was made using a Fostex 4-track cassette recorder. I just checked:
there are likely still around 30 of my compositions on my website that were recorded on a 4-track cassette deck—or at least some version of each composition.]
| "Niin kaukana..." (246.)
Piirros
on hyvin vanha, kai 70-luvulta. Siinä brittien Ark Royal -lentotukialus uppoaa.
["So far away...": This piece has always been a personal favorite of mine, though perhaps I haven’t managed to execute it in a way that makes it truly successful to listen to. The drawing
relates to it only through a loose textual connection. The drawing is quite old, from the 70s, I believe, and depicts the sinking of the British aircraft carrier "Ark Royal".]
| "Uros" (247.)
["Male"): This track reflects my sense of humor, and it might not resonate with everyone. Still, I think it’s a decent composition. I’ve included a whole bunch of my cartoon gags, just for the fun of it,
since it’s a humorous song. I composed this back in 2004 while working as a caretaker at Piispanmäki School; the evenings were very quiet, even a bit dull, so it must have been during the school holidays.
The principal, Mr. Turtiainen, knew that I composed and played music to pass the time, so when my contract ended, I thanked him by giving him a CD of my own songs. I composed three tracks there: this one,
"Aamuyö" (Early Morning), and a piece called "Proge Jam (Aikataulu)" (Prog Jam - Schedule). Also, my mother passed away while I was working there. The principal gave me 20 euros to buy flowers - or perhaps
a wreath - for her. I suppose I was completely broke at the time...]
| "Jospa vain..." (249.)
Kappale syntyi soundien etsimisen yhteydessä vahvarista, sanat ehkä vähän myöhemmin, en muista enää. Eka vahvarini taisi pian sipata näihin aikoihin. Kuva löytyi hoitoalan paprujeni joukosta,
monisteen reunasta. Senhän jätin kesken, sen koulun...
["If only...": The song came about while I was searching for sounds on my guitar amplifier; the lyrics perhaps a bit later, I don’t really recall anymore. My first amp probably gave up the ghost around
that time. I found the drawing among my papers from my healthcare studies, in the margin of a copy paper. I never finished that, you know, that schooling...]
| "...Luovutan aina ajoissa!" (253.)
["I always give up in time...": A true story here, too. I lost a night’s sleep over an argument, and that same night, I wrote this song as a result. The image features a person - let’s call him "Duke 1"
- whose character might illustrate the theme: always giving up before...]
| "Pian myos minä..!" (262.)
Piirros liittyy taas niihin vitseihini.
["Soon, me too..!": I sang and played this song for the young pupils at Talvisalo-school, along with their teachers and assistants, back in 2013, I believe? I also performed another one, "Nostalgia (Maria)",
accompanying myself on guitar and piano.
The subject matter is likely quite sad, and as for the other one... hmm... well, it does contain some rather unsettling metaphors... but so be it. The drawing,
once again, relates to my jokes. By the way, in this recorded version,
I make use of my children’s own instruments, 'toy' instruments, you might call them: a frame drum, a lollipop drum, and
a metallophone (xylophone), which features in the solo and the latter part of the track. There are also alto and soprano recorders, a 12-string guitar
in the mix, the piano, of course, my vocals, and -
in the very final chord - a snare drum played with brushes. At the very least, those are the elements present.]
| "Ruusu" (268.)
Kappale on yksi omista suosikeistani. Piirros taas ("Mummu") on sellainen ohimenevä, nopea sutaisu (PC-piirros?), joka kuitenkin elää..! Nimi + kuva yhdessä ovat huumoria.
["A Rose (An Old woman)": This piece is one of my personal favorites. The drawing itself ("An old woman (Mummu")) is a quick, fleeting sketch (a digital drawing, perhaps?), yet it’s full of life!
The combination of the name and the image creates a humorous effect.]
| "Musta Neilikka" (269.)
Ehkä biisissä on jotain, miksi olen liittänyt tämän kuvan kappaleeseen... Piirroksen nimi on "Duke 2".
["Black Carnation": Perhaps there is something in the song that led me to associate this image with it... The title of the drawing is "Duke 2".]
["Shooting Star": I recall composing this with a somewhat... problematic feeling. But I always draw inspiration from stars and space, always, and so the piece was completed nonetheless. The images
relate to a shooting star, though primarily on a realistic level ("Meteor Rain" I and II). Mind you, the objects in the drawings are quite substantial chunks of rock.]
| "Joululaulu" (273.)
Itse rakastan tätä sävellystä, inkkari-teemoista huolimatta. Piirrokset taas ovat Atari STe:llä piirettyjä joulukorttejani, joskus 90-luvulla kai. Viimeinen kuva esiintyi jo "Rauhan Laulussa".
["Christmas Song": I personally love this composition, despite the Native American-inspired themes. As for the drawings, they are Christmas cards I created on an Atari STe, sometime in the 90s,
I suppose. The final image also appeared in "Song of Peace".]
["An Artist's Life": The images relate to the composition only in terms of their character; the refined "The Jester and the Guardsman".]
| "Mistä tulit sä..?" (288.)
Tämä kappale on yksi omista suosikeistani, vaikka siellä on yksi lyhyt, rytminen kökkö musiikissa.
["Where did you come from..?": This track is one of my personal favorites, even though there is one brief, rhythmically awkward moment in the music. The song, the lyrics included, has always
sparked my imagination, so it was easy to develop the image into a drawing.]
| "Huone" (298.)
["A Room"): "Huone" is about an apartment we lived in, in the Haka area of ??Savonlinna, probably sometime in the early 1980s, back when the building manager gave us permission to paint and
fix up the place at his expense. I’ll likely draw a new picture for this soon, as the current one has far too many perspective errors (or maybe I won’t...). But I’ve always liked the song,
the solos, too.]
| "Veljeni" (303.)
Olenko
tulevaisuudessa jonkinlainen eri persoona, jonka tulee kokea maailma eri tavoin?" No, biisistä saa paremmin kuvan, miten mieleni myllersi.
["My Brother": I composed this piece in 2007, after undergoing a psychological evaluation to see if Asperger’s syndrome played a role in my personality. I was told I don’t have a 'pure' case
of it, but according to the evaluator, I do possess traits that fall within that spectrum. I have since embraced this as an integral part of who I am, and I now enjoy the positive qualities
it brings to my pursuits - in short, I am at peace with myself. It has been years since I last felt the need to 'find myself'. But back then, when I composed this, there was a great deal of
inner turmoil: I wondered, "Does this mean I haven't truly been 'Me' all this time? Will I become a different kind of person in the future, someone who experiences the world in a completely
different way?" Well, the song offers a better glimpse into the turmoil that was going on in my mind.]
Kuvan piirsin
sen tunteen ohjaamana, kai noin 2024 paikkeilla, eli uusi piirros, mikä on jo aika harvinaista minulla; musiikki itse vie miltei kaiken aikani.
["On Loneliness": This text is by Keijo Naski, and it has had a profound impact on me. He portrays loneliness with such a strong, distinct character that I myself perceive it almost as a devil,
a demon, or something of that sort. I drew the image - guided by that very feeling - sometime around 2024; it’s a recent piece, which is quite rare for me, as music itself consumes nearly all
of my time.]
| "Miettivät kalat" (316.)
Merja Ritalan teksti Savoon liittyen. Kunhan tuhersin ajankulukseni tällaisen pienen työn kappaleen kylkiäisiksi.
["The Thinking Fish": A text by Merja Ritala related to Savo. I just scribbled this little piece to pass the time, as an accompaniment to the main text.]
| "Kuunkaari ja Valo" (318.)
Innostuin edellisen työn huumassa piirtämään tähänkin, Merja Ritalan tekstiin säveltämääni työhön, kuvaa, jossa peurakin juoksentelisi; enhän minä osaa elukoita piirtää..! Perkele! Vähän otti päähän.
No, kuva on ilman peuraa, mutta onpahan edes kuva, joka syntyi tekstin pohjalta.
["Moon-arc and Light": Caught up in the excitement of my previous project, I decided to include an illustration for this piece, which I composed based on a text by Merja Ritala, featuring a deer
running about. But, of course, I don’t know how to draw animals! Damn it! That really annoyed me.
Well, the final image doesn't have a deer, but at least there is an illustration, one that was
inspired by the text.]
| "Revontulen verenpuna" (322.)
["Blood-Red Northern Lights": Merja Ritala wrote a text set in an ancient Finnish, or Kalevala-esque—milieu. Inspired by trips to the hillforts ('Linnavuoret') in Sulkava and elsewhere, I produced
a couple of drawings based on historical themes, which I have also incorporated into the composition. My drawings aren't particularly good, anatomically speaking, for instance, but perhaps the
scenarios and the information they convey make up for these shortcomings?]
| Preludi / "Armeijat" (331.)
Luin Julius Caesarin kirjan "Gallian sota" ja se innoitti minua tekemään listaa Galli-heimoista ja niistä tuntemuksista, joita epätoivoiset ihmiset sotajoukoissa ehkä tunsivat. Alussa on Preludi
["Prelude / The Armies": I read Julius Caesar’s "The Gallic War", which inspired me to compile a list of Gallic tribes and reflect on the emotions that desperate people within these armies might
have felt. The piece begins with a Prelude, (an overture), in which I employed (or at least attempted to employ) a pentatonic scale for the melodic movement, layered with synthesizer sounds. I
wonder: do these musical passages lean more toward a Baltic style, or perhaps an Arabic one?]
| "Mitä se nainen itkee?" (345.)
Merja Ritalan tekstiin säveltämäni työ vuodelta 2013. Bändiversio on mielestäni onnistuneempi, koska on nauhoitettu heti sävellyksen valmistuttua. Piirrokset ovat ehkä parin vuoden takaisia
(2024?), nopeita sutaisujani taas.
["Why is that Woman Crying?": A piece I composed in 2013, based on a text by Merja Ritala. I think the band version is more successful, as it was recorded right after the composition was
finished. The drawings are from a couple of years ago (2024?), just some quick sketches of mine.]
["Just like the Others": I composed this piece back in 2015, when some Finnish assholes threw stones at refugees arriving in our country by bus, acting in an utterly brainless manner. You could
say that these were among the few times I’ve felt ashamed to be a Finnish citizen, to be Finnish. The photo itself was taken at the moment I was composing this piece in our yard.]
| "Unen rajoilla" (362.)
["On the Threshold of Sleep": This composition is a personal favorite of mine, along with the one that precedes it in the sequence. I believe this is because the compositional process behind
them had a specific goal: to learn how to play very slow-tempo rhythms, primarily on the drums, as I find maintaining that precise rhythm to be mystically difficult. I’m not sure why, but I
composed these two for myself with that very purpose in mind. I just created the drawing (in 2026), though the original sketch, drawn the moment I woke up, might still be somewhere among my
papers; in other words, the text for this piece comes from an actual dream I had. The drawing didn't turn out perfectly, but I’m not too fussy, at least I have an image to go with this
track.]
| "Ystäväni - kuka soittaa kelloja?" (370.)
Kappaleesta on useampi versio
sivustollani, tämä on v. 4
["My Friend – Who is Ringing the Bells?": A piece composed to a text by Merja Ritala. It is not exactly easy to play, at least, I found it challenging. But otherwise, it is inspiring and
features a sufficiently rich harmonic structure, among other qualities.
The text comes across in a vivid way. I even recorded a video of this piece, but it seems I managed to lose that quite
soon afterward, the image here is a still taken from that PC-camera video. There are several versions of the piece
on my website; this is version no. 4.]
| "Vanha mies" (372.)
Toka kuva on
kännykkävideosta napattu, jonka vaimoni kuvasi. Siellä vilahtaa rakas koiramme Musca ja pari kissaammekin.
["Old Man": I met an old man through my work; we chatted a bit, and the details in my text are, for the most part, the absolute truth. However, the person who made him smile wasn't me,
it was my colleague, Heidi. I included the first image because it fits the theme; I drew it, inspired by a book by Dostoevsky, in fact, the drawing is titled "Old Man (After Dostoevsky)".
The second image is a still taken from a video my wife shot on her phone. You can catch a glimpse of our beloved dog, Musca, as well as a couple of our cats.]
| "Joki, jolta silta puuttuu" (376.)
["A River Lacking a Bridge": I almost always, even while at work, think about the solutions and challenges within my compositions; it’s quite possible that I even sang some unfinished parts
of this piece to Merja Ritala over the phone while I was on the job. The image is from an Atari STe game I developed with Jukka-Pekka Piepponen, Jussi handled the programming, and I did the
graphics.]
| "Sentimental Piece ('Musca')" (386.)
[Our beloved dog Musca passed away in 2022, and I dedicated this composition to her memory. She used to sleep at my feet while I was composing the opening section on the piano, but she was
already gone by the time I finished the work. I hope that this, that absence, can be heard in the music...]
| Waltz no. 3, C (389.)
Olen liittänyt tämän valssin mukaan kappaleen evoluutiosta 3 erilaista vaihetta; tuo on siis kappaleen kehityksen prosessia, kuinka se muuttui lopulliseen asuunsa. Soivassa versiossa on sitten
koko valmis nuottikuva.
[I have included three different stages of this waltz’s evolution; that is, the process of its development, showing how it transformed into its final form. The audio version, meanwhile, presents the
complete, finished musical score.]
| "Kumara mies" (390.)
["The Stooped Man": Merja asked whether I had drawn anything yet for this one or the next, so I started pondering whether I could find some inspiration for them. I had an old man in mind, this is how it
turned out, and it seems Merja was referring to me (since, just a little earlier, I had been grumbling to her on the phone about the injustices of the world), and she seized on that cue immediately. But
I’ve always had this same temperament; it hasn’t changed a bit, whether I’m young or old. Here I stand, opposite a bakery-café, a top the high cliffs of Talvisalo in Savonlinna, bowing, in a sense, to
them rugged grandeur.]
["An 'X' Written on the Back": The text is by Merja Ritala. It was difficult to come up with something to illustrate here, as the subject matter was quite different from the type of content that usually
inspires me to draw spontaneously. I find it very difficult to draw people and animals, especially animals.]
Huumoriakin siinä on mukana hienosti. Kuvan piirsin äsken, en oikein keksinyt mitään hyvää aihetta, joten piirsin siihenkin huumoria, Merjan tekstin mukaisestikin hieman.
["I cannot Stand before Agricola": In the summer of 2024, I composed a good-sized batch of songs based on these texts by Merja Ritala. I would often take a folder and my classical guitar out to the
tarp-covered pavilion in our yard, sometimes, perhaps, with a glass of white wine in front of me, too... the sun was shining,
it was warm, and life was good. There must be about 25 of them - I developed the
vocal lines and guitar parts right there in the shelter, all in one go... a wonderful memory! As for this particular little song, I’ve always been fond of it; it’s
lighthearted and easy to pick up. It also
features a lovely touch of humor. I just finished drawing the accompanying picture; I couldn’t quite come up with a specific subject, so I injected some humor into that as well, drawing a bit of inspiration
from Merja’s text, too.]
| "Unien paimen, osa II: Fredrik" (422.)
Merja Ritalan neliosoisen trilogian ensimmäinen osa. Kertoo Merjan esi-isästä Fredrik Huggista ja hänen kavereistaan pikkorötöstelyjen tiellä. Poliisin piirsin tuohon ja yritin muutkin henkilöt laittaa hieman
epätavallisempiin asemiin kuvassa, vaikk'ei taitoni siihen ihan riitäkään. Mutta tarkoitus oli ihan hyvä.
["Shepherd of Dreams, Part II: Fredrik": The first installment of a four-part trilogy (sic) by Merja Ritala. It tells the story of Merja’s ancestor, Fredrik Hugg, and his friends as they embark on a path
of petty mischief. I included a police officer, and I tried to place the other characters in somewhat more unusual poses, though my skills aren't quite up to the task! Still, the intention was good.]
| "Unien paimen, osa II: Mistäs sais villalankaa?" (423.)
Merja Ritalan neliosoisen trilogian toinen osa.
["The Shepherd of Dreams, Part II: Where can one get some Wool Yarn?": The second installment in Merja Ritala’s four-part trilogy (sic). The illustration didn’t turn out quite as I had hoped, the text
itself is truly beautiful and powerful, and I even fished it out of the trash a couple of times; however, following some suggestions from my child, I added floor tiles and many other elements that were
missing from the original version, so it will have to do. I know nothing about knitting or anything of the sort, so I couldn’t really include any related details. In my opinion, drawing people and animals
is extremely difficult. Having a reference model would certainly help, at least a little... Oh, and one more thing: this woman, or girl, is the daughter of Fredrik Hugg, who appeared in the previous
song.]
| "Toveri Prokofiev" (428.)
Tämä Merja Ritalan tekstiin tehty kappale on omasta mielestäni saanut ihan liian vähän huomiota - vaikuttaneeko asiaan kappaleen nimi (venäläinen), vai mikä lie, mutta piirsin jo senkin takia siihen
nopean tuherroksen, että saan sitä esille enemmän.
["Comrade Prokofiev": In my opinion, this track—based on a text by Merja Ritala—has received far too little attention. Perhaps the title (which sounds Russian) is a factor, or maybe something else is
at play; regardless, I decided to create a quick sketch for it, if only to help bring it a bit more into the spotlight.]
| "Varo tupakoivaa lintua" (431.)
Merja Ritalan sanoihin, haikuihin ja tankoihin, säveltämäni työ. Soiva versio on bändisoittimien kera. 2 muutakin akustista versiota kappaleesta on. Sutaisin tuohon minun näkemykseni linnusta, kun en
elukoita osaa piirtää.
["Beware the Smoking Bird": A piece I composed based on the lyrics, haikus, and tankas by Merja Ritala. The version presented here features a full band. There are also two other acoustic versions of the
song. I also dashed off my own take on the bird-though, truth be told, I’m not exactly great at drawing animals.]
| "Ne muurilamput, valonkantajat, osa I: Haukankouluttaja" (432.)
["The Wall Lamps, Bearers of Light, Part I: The Hawk Trainer": The first installment of another trilogy of mine. The drawing is rather crude... I’m not really sure whether I should use a proper
reference or just draw from my imagination, though, in that case, the proportions and anatomy are bound to end up wrong. When I draw from a reference (for instance, using photos of myself taken with my
phone, hands, poses, and so on), the details turn out much more realistic; but which approach constitutes 'more' art? Hard to say, really!
The piece is quite labor-intensive, though it doesn't seem to
have really resonated with the audience. Perhaps I can understand that perspective too, maybe...]
| "Quotation" (439.)
Käytännössähän kyse on ihan puhtaasta tabulatuurikirjoituksesta. Soivassa versiossa olen tietysti soinnuttanut nuoruuden melodiaani
eri tavoin ja tutkinut, onko siinä yhtään mitään ideaa. Mutta melodian olen saanut noista, ehkä 1975 piirtämistäni koukeroista.
[These consecutive works (439.–440.) are, in effect, my very first compositions; the papers reveal how someone who knew absolutely nothing about music at the time attempted - using some sort of system -
to jot down a musical idea he had conceived. In practice, it amounts to pure tablature notation. For the version that is actually performed, I have, of course, applied different chords to this youthful
melody and explored whether there is any real substance to it. However, the melody itself is derived from those scribbles I made, perhaps back in 1975.]
| "Treacherous Runaway Chase" (440.)
Nämä peräkkäiset työt (439.-440.) ovat, kuten edellä mainitsin, käytännössä minun ensimmäiset sävellykseni. Tabulatuurikirjoitukseksihan tuota voi jo sanoa, idea on ihan sama. Soivassa versiossa
olen luonnollisestikin soinnuttanut ja kokeillut useampiakin sointulinjoja ja tonaalisia tehoja, ja tutkinut, kestääkö melodia millä tasolla sellaisia ja löytyykö jotain uusia yllätyksiä.
Minähän olen nyt 66 -vuotias ja nuo melodiat on tuhertanut 14 -vuotias, eri lähtökuopissa oleva ihminen. Mielenkiintoistakin mielestäni..!
[These consecutive works (439.–440.) are, as I mentioned earlier, effectively my very first compositions. One could even call the notation a form of tablature; the concept is essentially the same. In the
version intended for performance, I have - naturally - added harmonies, experimenting with various chord progressions and tonal effects to see how well the melody holds up and whether any new,
surprising elements emerge. I am now 66 years old, yet these melodies were scribbled down by a 14-year-old a person starting from a completely different point in life. I find that quite interesting!]
| "Tiukkaan napitettu pappi" (443.)
pianolauluksi. Kuvaan piirsin katolisen papin, koska heillä on jänniä nuo hatut, ja olen katsellut tiuhaan "Isä Camillo" -filmejä.
["The Tightly Buttoned-up Priest": This composition sat among my papers for years as a collection of unfinished, varied attempts. It always used to annoy me whenever I stumbled across it while leafing
through my notes, so I decided, dammit, that I was surely capable of setting at least one text to music. The lyrics are by Merja Ritala and are reportedly based on actual events that took place on a
train, though, presumably, with some artistic license. I arranged this piece both for a full band and as a piano/vocal version. For the illustration, I drew a Catholic priest; they have such interesting
hats, and I’ve been watching the "Don Camillo" films quite a lot lately.]
| "Filosofiaa?" (445.)
Viime vuonna, 2025, minulle tuli suunnaton ikävä ja kaipaus, soittaa ja säveltää musiikkia rockbändille ja -soittimille... No, 8 kappaletta ainakin voisi asettaa tuohon kategoriaan siitä lähtien.
Miksi? Miksi ei voinut vain
jättää kommentoimatta biisiä, jos siitä ei pitänyt? Vai olisiko sitten joku sanojen rakastaja närkästynyt tekstistäni roskana ja päätynyt tuohon valintaan? En tietäne koskaan. No kuitenkin, tuo kuva
["Philosophy?": Last year, in 2025, I felt an immense longing, a deep desire, to write and compose music for a rock band and rock instrumentation... Well, since then, at least 8 tracks could be placed
in that category.
For me, the lyrics are always the absolute worst part - if I’m not addressing social grievances - or, as I did when I was younger, writing about love - then I really have nothing to
say to anyone... Through music, I can express a great deal, but... well, everyone should live their life as they see fit. I don’t know how to write poetically; I’ve spent my whole life reading scientific
and factual texts, not poetry. Perhaps there’s a connection there, in the underlying reasons, that is. Regardless, I managed to scrape the lyrics together, and in the end, I felt a great sense of
satisfaction, because they allowed me to incorporate some excellent melodic and structural ideas into the composition, and I’m truly pleased with my work. The only annoying thing was that someone on
YouTube gave the track a 'thumbs down'. Why? Why couldn't they have just left it alone if they didn't like it? Or perhaps some poetry enthusiast took offense at my lyrics, deemed them trash, and decided
to react that way? I’ll never know. Anyway, that image relates to a medieval worldview, something I’ve been familiar with since I was a very small child. "Pikku-Jättiläinen" (A Little Giant) was a book
I leafed through very frequently; I wrote the text for the passage from memory, and only afterwards did I look up the image and text in the book in question to see if I had remembered correctly. Hence
the image.]
["The Good and the Bad": This piece was inspired by a real-life event from years ago. I couldn't get the proportions right in the drawing, and I even tried to add more people to the scene, but the
proportions were completely messed up there, too. It’s tough when you don’t have a handle on anatomy while trying to draw. A real shame, that.]
| "Raskas tango" (451.)
["Heavy Tango": I can’t really say much about this piece, other than the fact that the subject matter inspires my creative pen, both in terms of lyrics and music, far more than the usual, everyday
aspects of life. I just made a rather poor drawing for it (in 2026), but I’ve included it here alongside the piece anyway.]
Kaunista...
["The Golden Shoes": In my opinion, this song is one of the most beautiful and successful collaborations I’ve done with Merja Ritala. Merja’s lyrics are truly beautiful and full of emotion...
Beautiful...]
| "Syylä" (456.)
Tämä on minun mittapuullani hyvin laaja sävellys, siinä on vaikka mitä; käyrätovien aloitus pianon kera, rauhallista pianolaulua, raskaampaa bändiosuutta, klassisen ja sähkökitarasoolon kaunis osuus,
ja lopuksi 3-ääninen, pieni kuoro-osa plus jälleen kahden käyrätorven + pianon lopetus. Lauluhan kertoo Donald Trumpin typeryydestä ja ahneudesta. Piirsin hänet alkutekstiin viitaten kiikkumaan
pikkutyttönä.
["Wart": By my standards, this is a very expansive composition, it contains all sorts of things; an opening with French horns and piano, a tranquil piano-led vocal section, a heavier band segment,
a beautiful passage featuring both classical and electric guitar solos, and finally, a short three-part choral section, concluding once again with two French horns and piano. The song itself deals
with the stupidity and greed of Donald Trump. Drawing inspiration from the opening lyrics, I depicted him as a little girl on a swing.]
